The word ‘gay’. Some may not want to look into such a word because it makes them feel uncomfortable or anxious about what it implies, yet many are quick to use the expression to refer to something or someone as ‘stupid’ or ‘rubbish’.

The word gay is an adjective and it derived in early 17th century. It meant ‘happy’ or ‘carefree’, yet somewhere along the line turned into a term used for describing someone who is attracted to the same sex as themselves. The way some people use this word in this day and age simply makes me sick to my stomach. You hear it in a lot of kids these days and even in some so-called adult figures. My outlook may differ from others, but being gay does not indicate you are rubbish or dim, it simply means that you have an attraction to the same sex, and there is nothing wrong with that.

It frightens me when people I know say things such as ‘that test was so gay’. Has society gotten so dreadful that we are eager to be insulting to another way of life just for a few chuckles? No doubt, I have made the fault of using the term ‘gay’ in that manner before, and have felt horrible for doing so. I really believe being gay is acceptable, and I thought the world would grow to be more willing to accept homosexuals in our society, but now it has just been seen as garbage. Imagine a close friend of yours was a homosexual, and you were one of those people who imply that it is stupid. I can assure you that that person would lose all respect for you, and almost certainly not feel at ease around you.

The use of this word would be acceptable if you were referring to something or someone who is homosexual. Like if you were to say ‘that movie was so gay’. It would be okay if you were talking about a movie with gay themes and characters, but if you were referring to how awful you thought the movie was, it would be tremendously pejorative. If you think being gay is not right, then that is your opinion, an opinion that others like myself do not want to listen to.

I would really like to see the nasty use of this term disappear. Because it is not just insulting to people of homosexual tendencies, it is offensive to me and the countless other people who share in my belief.
