How did our workshops go? Did Sietta slip down into sulliness or did they slide to success? Read on to find out!

Today I write of a momentous occasion; the first event run by YAG has been a great success! Not only was it well attended by over 20 bright young minds, by the end of the two day workshop a two minute track was produced, with input from a beat boxer, a guitarist, an entire band and some young aspiring singers.

The workshops were run by James and Caiti from Sietta, a local band who released their debut album The Seventh Passenger last year and have been touring non-stop, with coverage of the singles on Triple J! If you haven’t already heard their music check out this music video of the second single from the album, No Longer Hurt:

The most obvious evidence of the workshop’s achievements was the show and tell day, with over an hour and a half of ‘showing’ what people learnt, from singing songs to a comedy routine and Sietta and a trio of singers taking requests. There were noodles and lamingtons for all and the parents who turned up were outwardly enjoying themselves.

Some of the songs performed were Adele’s “Someone Like You”, Skarlett’s original “Graduation” and Sietta’s “Doormat”

Have a listen to the end product – a funky electronica song recorded by all the participants!

The whole thing was great fun, but don’t take it from me; here’s what the participants thought:

Jack Reedy: Take it from Lang: he knows what's up, dog!

" width="338" height="266" />
Abbey Rose: I thought it was awesome and I learnt a lot of useful things.

All in all, it was a great few days; we all learned a lot from James and Caiti, and can’t wait to see them again!

Tony explores myths and truths about contemporary Paganism and Wicca religions.

Over the past centuries there has been a lot of misinformation given out about Paganism, Witchcraft and Wicca. For one, none of these spiritual groups are Satanic; no form of paganism, whether it be Neo, Paleo, or Meso-paganism, believes in any form of a “Devil.” Sure, in ancient religions there is a god or goddess of the underworld but that is nothing more than a title. They don’t even believe in a “Hell” per se, in fact the word hell comes from an ancient Norse goddess called Hel, who was the goddess of the underworld.

Ok, Wicca first. Wicca comes from the Gaelic word Wicc pronounced Wich, which means healer/ worker of magic, which funnily enough is where our word witch comes from. Wow, don’t get lost on me here guys, that’s it for the linguistics for now. Wicca as the new religion is only about 50-100 years old, it is founded upon the same belief system of most ancient religions; its just a new take on the old ways. Wiccans believe in the power of the Earth Mother and the Horned God, they are their deities. They believe in the power of nature and that in helping our Mother Earth she will grant them the power to become one with her.

Most witches or pagans believe in the old ways, the ways of our ancestors – believing in more than one god/goddess. This is called a polytheistic religion – as opposed to monotheistic religions that only believe in one god. Basically any of the ancient religions are polytheistic; Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece, Celt, Norse (Viking), Indian, Hinduism (before the influx of Islam into India) Taoism (before the arrival of Buddhism), Shinto (again before Buddhism), the Aztecs, Mayans, American Indians, and Australian Aboriginals. Wow, would you look at that! That’s almost every religion isn’t it?

So what happened? The Crusades, from 1095 – 1291 were a series of wars waged by the pope to regain control of the “Holy Land.” They were fought mostly by Roman Catholics, against Muslims and Greek orthodox Christians (all monotheistic religions), but smaller campaigns were waged against the pagan Slavs, pagan Balts, Mongols and “Christian Heretics”.

Another example of aggression against paganism is the witch trials, where people who were believed to be ‘witches’ were put on trial and executed. Everyone in modern times has heard of the witch trials, I mean we still use the expression “a witch hunt” this very day. The witch trials started in south-eastern France during the 1400’s before spreading like a plague through central Europe and then to other parts of the continent and in some of the Eastern European colonies in North America. The peak of the witch hunting years was between 1580 and 1630 AD. Over the entire duration of the phenomenon (some four centuries), there was an estimated total of 40,000 – 60,000 executions. Many of these people actually just followed pagan religions.

The next misconception about witchcraft is the pentagram. First of all the typical pentagram with a circle around it, as seen in movies, is wrong; a pentagram is a 5 pointed star with no circle surrounding it. OK, some more linguistics: ‘penta’, as most people know means 5 and gram is ancient Greek for “something written” or “drawing”. So together they mean five picture – a.k.a. a five pointed star. Pentacle, on the other hand, means five-circle, you can see where the misconception lies. A pentacle is the five pointed star with a circle around it, a pentagram is the one without (although they’re similar concepts).

Another misconception is that the pentagram is the symbol for the devil; the symbol of Satanism is actually an inverted crucifix. Why is this? Because Satanism is considered the opposite of Christianity. The pentagram is the symbol for the five natural elements: earth, air, fire, water and spirit. Whether it be upside down or not, it means the same thing, although in some areas of paganism if the top or spirit point is facing down then it is used for ‘dark’ magick rather than ‘good’ magick (although in other sects it is just another symbol for the horned god).

A representation of the pentagram with the 5 pagan elements

Is there another word for male witches? No, a witch is a witch no matter which witch is which. A wizard should more often than not be called an alchemist or a warlock (Honestly, the semantics are pretty varied). The term wizard was most likely manufactured for fantasy literature, and it doesn’t really have any bearing on paganism.

I am a convert to paganism myself, I was born and baptised a Roman Catholic, but I couldn’t deal with what I saw as the use of fear to intimidate people into belief, using it as a tool to make people be good. Most Middle Eastern monotheistic religions make heavy use of the image of hell; where if you are a ‘sinner’ you will suffer for all eternity. Its just something I can’t really believe – why would an all knowing being send the creations that he loves to a place where they will be tortured for all eternity?

I have found that the clergy themselves do not necessarily follow these ideas – there are many different interpretations of the bible. But I just couldn’t take some of the interpretations in, so I did some research and eventually found my way into Paganism, and all the witches I’ve met so far, including one of my aunts, have been really nice.

Darwin City Council’s GRIND team are celebrating another year of working with young artists with the official opening of the Youth Arts Exhibition.

The exhibition contains work by young people from Darwin aged 12 to 20 years. Exhibitors will be eligible for three prizes; the Judges’ Choice, People’s Choice, and Artists’ Choice awards. Each prize is a $100 gift voucher for art supplies.

The official opening will be held at the Civic Centre on Thursday 15 December from 4pm. It will be a relaxed celebration, featuring a musical performance from young musician Abbey Rose, light refreshments, and the announcement of the Judges’ Choice award winner.

The first peices picked up for the exhibition - from students at O'Loughlin Catholic College

Judges include Charles Darwin University Visual Art lecturer Sarah Pirri, Darwin Visual Arts Association’s Leanne Waterhouse, and Council Arts and Cultural Development Officer Allison Gray.

The exhibition will be open during business hours at the Civic Centre for seven weeks, closing on Wednesday 1 February.

GRIND member Olivier Hasan-Fourcard, whose work is in this year’s exhibition, said “young artists need to get their work exposed to the greater community, and the GRIND Youth Arts Exhibition is an excellent opportunity to do this”

So come one, come all, to the Youth Arts Exhibition opening on Thursday! Art, entertainment, refreshments and FUN!

Quiz4Dili will be happening again in 2011, on the 25th of November!

Run by Council’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) and GRIND, Quiz4Dili will be raising money for the Action for Change Foundation (ACF), a training school operating in an extremely impoverished area of Dili, East Timor.

Last year’s Quiz 4 Dili was organised largely by young people from the Youth Advisory Group and GRINDonline, who ran all the games, raffles and management on the night, as well as writing the quiz. The night was a great success and was sold out, with 110 people attending. A total of $3,429 was raised, which was then increased with $1,000 from Council.

The money was used to provide ACF with 6 computers and an internet connection, as well as ongoing support to help them interact with the global community.

Tickets are $20 ($15 for concession), and this will include a light dinner. Starts at 7pm at the Council Civic Centre on Harry Chan Avenue. For more info, and to book tickets call 8930 0635!

Action for Change Foundation

Action for Change Foundation is run by volunteers, and gives young people in Dili access to information, computers, internet training, English language skills and other courses. This provides real opportunities for the youth of Dili to gain skills that lead to employment and a better life.

The Youth Advisory Group and GRINDonline are very supportive of the school’s mission, and had the opportunity to work with volunteers from the school – Veny, Vero and Nata – for The BIG GIG 2011 when they travelled to Darwin earlier in the year.

I’ve been a fan of Batman for as long as I can remember. So here we are, the DC Animated Feature, Batman: Year One. A review by Markus

I’ve been a fan of Batman for as long as I can remember. The strangest thing though is that I never really liked the old animated series while I was growing up. No, my life for Batman grew from another series that was released a little later. In Australia that show was called Batman of the Future, but in America it was called Batman: Beyond. Now I’m not quite sure which one I really prefer, but I guess that is irrelevant. The fact is there are two fictional characters that I can truly say I love, and one of them is Batman. The other mind you is a character of a whole different light, his name is Donkey Kong, but again I guess that is irrelevant considering the context. While I love Donkey Kong mainly due to the childhood memories it brings up, that feeling of nostalgia, the reason I love Batman is entirely different, something more reminiscent of my teen years, that feeling of being alone, wanting to be a complete badass, the hero…

Which is why Batman: Beyond, with its more teen based marketing campaign, came out at a time that made it far more relevant to me than any other show on. From this original sin, came a more sophisticated appreciation for the old animated series, and then came the movies, The Dark Knight etc. But more importantly soon came the first comic book I ever read. A little known piece of literature called “Batman: Year One”. For many this is the seminal Batman work, the comic book that defined Batman, written of course by none other than the great Frank Miller, who reinvented the character and comic books in general, with his more adult focused tone. Soon this lead to reading more Batman, and more, and more , until of course that leads us to now. Years after that first contact, that first comic book, that first look into the sick and twisted mind of The Caped Crusader himself… And It’s time to take a second glance at that same comic book, but this time, why not watch it? Why? The question these days doesn’t seemed to be, “Why adapt something that was perfectly made for one medium to another?” and more “Why not adapt something that was perfectly made for one medium to another?” So here we are, the DC Animated Feature, Batman: Year One.

The first thing I notice while watching is an annoying CGI Plane. Why does it need to be CGI? It’s a traditionally animated film from what I can see; there is no need to make the plane CGI. Am I supposed to think it’s real? I don’t know, I guess it doesn’t matter, anyway I hear the voice of Benjamin McKenzie, he’s okay I guess, the Batman voice he does is better than most I supposed, better than Christian Bale… As if that’s really saying much of anything. Although it a pretty good voice, it holds absolutely nothing on Kevin Conroy, which is unfair I guess, because Kevin Conroy is the be all end all of Batman and his voice, mastered it so perfectly… Oh I seem to be going off track… Anyway the next voice I hear makes me feel all soft inside. It is the voice of the always wonderful Bryan Cranston. He saves the entire film in my opinion, he is the only really great part about it, all of the other actors are pretty meh. Especially Eliza Dushku, who delivers a bland as all hell rendition of Selina Kyle, who becomes Catwoman, although I’m not sure why she’s even in the movie because she has no real plot, and instead is just strategically placed throughout the film as if to give off the impression that she’ll be important. Look, I know that that’s how it was written in the comic book and whatever that’s Frank Millers prerogative to do so. But you’re creating an adaptation of a comic book you are allowed to take some liberties, especially considering the 64 Minute runtime, I feel like there was more than enough time to flesh out the character.

This film, is certainly the best page for page adaptation of a comic book I have ever seen in my life, but that is also its biggest flaw, when you adapt something from one medium to another, you can’t just do it word for word, that is so lazy, now I get it with movies like Watchman and Sin City, that makes the films seem artistic and cool and all that, but when you’re doing it with an animated movie, it just comes off as bland and lazy, there are practically no colours, all of the framing is the same, I mean there’s even no music as if to make it feel more like reading a comic book. I mean why even animate it? Why not just drop all pretence and scan pages of the comic onto the computer and have Bryan Cranston read out all of the dialogue and narration? It just annoys me when stupid movie makers feel the need to succumb so easily to fan peer pressure, I mean do you really think fans were going to complain if you added an extra half an hour of story to the film? Maybe more actions sequences, I mean it’s not like you gave us any new ones, the one action sequence from the book that you did animate had already been copied frame for frame by another Batman film, I’m not sure, you may have heard of it… it’s called Batman Begins. I mean.. whatever, I don’t really have any more to say about this film. Except that it’s disappointing because I was looking forward to it and all I got was a 64 Minute motion comic with a tacked on voice acting cast (Except Bryan Cranston – I Love You Bryan Cranston! )

Markus reviews Midnight In Paris, the latest offering from directory and writer Woody Allen, starring Owen Wilson.

‘Midnight in Paris’ is a movie I never expected myself to like, for one thing it stars the permanently depressed but upbeat Owen Wilson. Also, the trailer for the film made it out to be some annoying romantic comedy about rich people in Paris who are depressed but really have no reason to be. Which isn’t hard to believe coming from Woody Allen, it seems that those are the only kinds of romantic comedies he directs these days. Which is fine, because like I said earlier, how does one compare an aging veteran of film, to an up and coming visionary of cinema? Regardless, the movie was nothing of the sort, and well, I don’t really want to give anything away, because I don’t want to spoil the fun, but the actual plot of the movie is not only original but actually deeply personal, and something I feel like we can all relate to in a way, the idea of living in the past, and never being really satisfied with what you’ve got.

Owen Wilson, delivers a surprisingly good performance in this film, although as I’ve already expressed, he pretty much just plays Owen Wilson throughout the whole movie, that sort of earnest interest in the things people have to say, and an intense positivity radiating out of every sentence he gives, even within mostly depressing scenes. But whatever, when it works it works and here it very well seems to work. The supporting cast is where the movie really shines, Rachel McAdams plays Wilsons fiancé, and she for the most part plays the role fairly well. Her parents provide comic relief throughout the film and also in a way are sort of antagonists as well, but only in a minor way. There really are no antagonists in the film; it’s mostly just about Owen Wilson on a journey of self-discovery whilst wondering the streets of Paris at night.

The movie is filmed as if it were an ad to move to Paris, although the interesting thing about it is, although it captures the obvious beauty of the city of love, it also captures the modern day dirtiness that you never really tend to see with these postcard films, which is something that I admire. Woody Allen has always been a director who knew how the capture the essence of a city, and although he falls short of that here, I feel like it’s one of the best foreign interpretations of the city I’ve seen in my life. The music is also very nice, and very fitting for the plot; although there’s definitely a lot of that hijinks music playing throughout, it’s mostly kept to the background. If you don’t know what music I’m, talking about, watch any romantic comedy movie from the past ten years, skip to any scene where some sort of hijinks is ensuing and return…

You’re back? Good. Just in time for a summary. The film is not ground-breaking, in fact it is far from it, and it’s not even trying to be. The movie states its self at the resolution that the lesson learned is only a minor one, but a lesson none the less. The movie is one that is rife with fairly obvious symbolism, but I feel like that’s fine for a movie as original as this, it’s a message to all of the people who have been criticising Woody Allen for his recent work, the days of ‘Annie Hall’ are long and dead, it’s time to stop living in the past and find something you enjoy about the present, because before too long it’ll be gone.

Rating: Go Watch It

Midnight In Paris is rated PG for mild sexual references

Corrugated Iron is currently recruiting 5-6 young filmmakers (animators, writers, directors, producers, photographers/cinematographers) aged 14-18 yrs to join a filmmaking/directing crew at Corrugated Iron this term.

The crew will meet each Friday afternoon at Corrugated Iron, 3.30 – 5.30 pm, for 6 sessions to develop and produce a short film on cyberbullying. The resulting film will be distributed throughout school’s across the NT in 2012 as a part of the Corrugated Iron Watch My Space program.

In the 6 sessions, Corrugated Iron and local filmmakers will be facilitating the team through each phase of the filmmaking process which will include sessions on:

Film brief

Pitching your film

Conceptual development

Storyboarding

Pre-Production

Production

This is a great opportunity for young aspiring filmmakers to get on board a real working team and learn the ins and outs of filmmaking, while producing a film advocating for a better awareness of cyberbullying in our community. The crew will work with both professional filmmakers associated with Corrugated Iron and the NT Police who will be advising the project team.

Keep in mind that this is not a ‘film class’ – while young people will be guided in the process of making the film, they must have the initiative to drive the film making process themselves – just as in the real filmmaking world. All members of the crew must commit to the team for the whole 6 weeks and be ready to play an active role in the process.

Spaces on the team are limited so register now – there are NO COSTS involved for young people to join the team.

Please get in touch with Corrugated Iron Youth Arts if you have any questions:
call 8948 3200 or
